SAFETY ADVICE FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON!
Christmas is such a magical time, but you can easily get distracted by baubles and bonbons, which could make you an easy target for opportunistic crime.
Staying Safe Online
- Only make purchases from safe sites - look for a lock icon in the URL bar and a web address that starts with ‘https.'
- Be wary of scams. Check out scamwatch.gov.au for up-to-date info on current scams.
- Avoid oversharing on social media, particularly surrounding personal details and being away from your home.
A Safe Night Out is a Good Night Out
- Take your ID, organise a designated driver and let your friends and family know where you are headed.
- If drinking
alcohol, stay hydrated, know your limits and don’t leave your drink unattended.
- Look after your friends! Stay together, don't let them leave with someone they have just met and avoid conflict situations.
Keeping Gifts Safe
- Avoid leaving gifts and valuables in your vehicle.
- Avoid having your Christmas tree and gifts in front of a window
which is visible from the street.
- Don’t leave boxes outside your premises which show what you have inside, as these may be a target for thieves.
Bring a Little Joy
- Christmas can be a lonely time for some - get in the Christmas spirit by checking on your neighbours or introducing yourself.
- Share the Christmas joy - a wave or a simple "hello," could make someone’s day.
If You're Going Away
- Organise a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property – empty your mailbox, mow your lawns, take your bins out.
- Complete the Absentee Advice Form to advise NT Police, Fire and Emergency services of your absence and provide details on who to contact in the event of an emergency at your premises.
